On the slabbing of stones through diamond wire cutting operations

Diamond wires are usually used in the cutting operations aimed to obtain slabs of stones. This tool consists of a steel cable on which are mounted annular metal—diamond pearls. The use of this technology expanded all over the world because of its advantages on other slabbing techniques as both technical and economical aspects are considered. Abstract Some of the most valuable bioactive compounds in beer comes from hops polyphenols, mainly flavonoids, some of which are unique to inflorescences of that flowering plant. Although far from pharmacologically relevant concentrations, low doses of xanthohumol and related prenylflavonoids found in beer contribute to the overall antioxidant activity of the product, as well as to significant chemopreventive action about certain diseases, such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and some cancer types. The Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) process has been widely accepted as a viable and promising technology to produce electric energy from salinity difference (salinity gradient power - e.g. using river water/seawater, or seawater and concentrated brines). Formability of Friction Stir Welded AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheets

The formability of friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets was investigated by means of uniaxial tensile and hemispherical punch tests performed under different process conditions. The results of the tensile tests were analysed in terms of flow stress and ductility at different temperature and strain rate; the hemispherical punch tests, carried out at different temperatures, provided the limiting dome height. The formability of FSW-ed blanks was compared to the one exhibited by the base material in order to evaluate the quality of the welded joints.

Abstract The influence of the phase behaviour of the solvent–antisolvent system on the process conditions for the gas–antisolvent process is investigated. The two fluids are modelled by the Peng–Robinson equation of state while the dissolved solid is described by a Clapeyron-type approach. Based on the correlation of the ternary system, a liquid–liquid immiscibility region has been found which hinders the proper crystallisation of the solute. A thorough investigation of the binary solvent–antisolvent system by the global phase diagram methods yields a criterion for the proper choice of the solvent. Investigations on the linear friction welding process through numerical simulations and experiments

Abstract Linear Friction Welding (LFW) is a solid-state joining process applied to non-axisymmetric components. LFW involves joining of materials through the relative motion of two components undergoing an axial force. In such process the heat source is given by the frictional forces work decaying into heat determining a local softening of the material and eventually bonding conditions. In the paper the authors present a designed and assembled laboratory fixture for LFW operations and the results of an experimental and numerical campaign aimed to weld steel parts. Separation of aminoalkanephosphonic acid enantiomers by indirect UV detection capillary electrophoresis with application of cyclodextrins.

Indirect UV detection capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used for the separation of aminoalkanephosphonic acid (AP) enantiomers by applying commercially available cyclodextrins as chiral discriminators. The results show that the separation of the enantiomers depends on pH of the background electrolyte, the molar ratio of cyclodextrin to aminophosphonic acid, and on the type of the applied chiral selector. Optimization of process conditions allowed enantiomeric baseline separation or partial separation of 12 out of 14 alpha-aminophosphonic acids studied. This type of CE might therefore be successfully used for routine determination of enantiomeric purity of aminophosphonic acids.
